Retinol benefits for skin and health

Retinol cream

Many people have many questions about what are the benefits of retinol and how to use it correctly and retinol benefits for skin and health. First you need to figure out what is retinol?

Retinol is one of the forms of fat-soluble vitamin A. It is widely used in dermatology and cosmetology to solve various skin problems.

All forms of vitamin A are converted to retinoic acid, which is used by skin cells and triggers all the beneficial effects for which vitamin A is used. Different forms of vitamin A are called retinoids, and they have different activities.

Vitamin A in the form of retinyl palmitate is present in skin cells, and a cascade of transformations (retinol → retinaldehyde → retinoic acid) must occur in order for it to reach the active form of retinoic acid.

Natural forms of retinoids are used in cosmetics, while synthetic derivatives are used in pharmaceuticals.

Why is retinol so good for the skin?

•Retinol reduces wrinkles.

• Accelerates the process of cell formation and regeneration.

• Evens out skin tone.

• Brightens age spots.

• Protects against negative environmental factors (antioxidant).

• Stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.

• Moisturizes and retains moisture.

• Increases skin elasticity.

• Improves blood circulation.

• Fights acne.

  • Fights post-acne (as a chemical peel).

But it must be borne in mind that there are also contraindications.

The main contraindication is the presence of oncological formations.  Also, do not use retinoid products for pregnant and lactating women.  Of course, too strong preparations with a high concentration of vitamin A cannot be found in stores – they are sold in pharmacies.  However, it is best to consult a beautician rather than prescribing retinol yourself.  It is also recommended to apply any product at night, and use SPF-protection during the day, otherwise age spots cannot be avoided.

How to use retinol

It depends on the format of the product you are using.  Most are available in serum form, but some are available as easy-to-use creams.

At the beginning of use, skin reactions are possible in the form of redness, peeling or a feeling of tightness.  These phenomena disappear after a while, the skin becomes addicted to retinol products.  It is necessary to start using the products 1-2 times a week and monitor the reaction of the skin. If the skin reacts well to retinol, then it can be used every other day, and then daily.

Before using the cream, dry your skin thoroughly, do not apply to wet skin – this increases the risk of irritation.

Always use retinol products at night, as sunlight can reduce their potency.  Apply the serums immediately after cleansing to get the most out of your vitamin A, and top up with a moisturizer if you feel your skin is undernourished.

Since retinol reduces the activity of the sebaceous glands, dry skin may occur.  Remember to use moisturizers!  A moisturizer is best applied in the morning and evening 40-60 minutes after you apply the retinol cream.
